Practice Your Piano

from "Get Better":

You’re not good enough yet.

It doesn’t matter how long you’ve been playing. In the classroom you’re listening, watching, keeping the metronome, checking for understanding, pronunciation, technique, and at least one more thing. Students are trying to remember everything that’s expected of them.

You’re playing abilities can’t be an obstacle to your singers. It’s got to be an automatic kind of playing.

Play all of the vocal parts, or as many as you can in as many combinations as you can. One hand and two. Faster, slower, while conducting, etc.

Also…

Practice playing while standing up. It never feels great, but it can feel better.

If you’re taller than the average person you should get used to playing while bent over. It will hurt your shoulders and back after a while. Or you can do the splits far enough to reach the keyboard without straining your shoulders. But then how will you use the pedals?

If you’re not sure how much to practice, the answer is more. Much, much more.
